Introducing Wall Coverings in a Practical Way

Introducing Wall Coverings in a Practical Way

What's It About?

In the second year of the painter and varnisher apprenticeship, students get acquainted with wall coverings – commonly known as wallpaper.

As part of the eighth learning module, they must learn and apply all the essential information: What do the symbols on wallpaper rolls mean? Which tools are available, and in what order should one approach the wallpapering process? How is the wallpaper requirement calculated, and what does “rapport” refer to?

Challenges

  • Challenge: The project involved developing practical assignments and informational texts for students, preparing them in an engaging manner for modern teaching.
  • Special Focus: In addition to the student edition, a teacher’s edition was also produced, which includes the solutions to the assignments and covers additional topics (e.g. for excursions or deeper insights).
  • Development: This project was part of the university seminar “Subject Didactics.” The texts were thematically divided and developed by a small team, while the final layout was crafted by Christina Vennegerts.

Working with Real-Life Scenarios

Today’s training programs span multiple school years and are divided into several learning modules. Each module has a clear focus: introducing the training company and its offerings, customer consultation, working with job-specific tools and materials, occupational safety, and much more.

A hallmark of modern instruction is not only to provide clear, understandable examples and materials that address the current needs of each training profession but also to offer examples drawn directly from everyday work life.

In these materials, the delivery of theoretical subject-specific knowledge (for example, calculating wallpaper needs, the history of wall coverings, and understanding the everyday symbols) is combined with practical customer assignments. For instance, students are required to handle customer emails and demonstrate their skills and knowledge by designing a modern waiting room or creating a yoga room for a kindergarten.
