With A Focus On UI
Hi, I’m Christina!
I’ve been a designer for print and digital media since 2010 and formally studied Media Design, Colour and Material Technology as well as Interior Design and Education of Design since.
In 2022, I started my YouTube channel, Christina Creates Games, where I explore UI topics and demonstrate how to use Unity’s UI elements. However, solid design principles are universal and do not care for game engines! It does not matter if you are working in Unity, Unreal, Godot, or any other engine. Even non-interactive UI is something I can help you with, for example if your designs aren’t implemented yet and live as mockups in any kind of graphics/layout app.
I’m dedicated to helping fellow game developers refine their UI, from overall flow to finer details like typography, structure, readability, and color. With a background in teaching, I can also explain exactly why something needs improvement.
If you’d like a friendly, knowledgeable collaborator to help make your game look and feel polished, I’m ready to help!
Testimonials
She delivered a well documented report, with tons of references and guidelines I should consider.
I'm now using this as a solid base to improve my UI/UX features. I'm super satistied with her work and will certainly ask for more in the future.
With her help, we have not only improved our UIs significantly but also picked up new practices and skills, making us better developers.
Her feedback on the game called out usability concerns (like a lack of close button on the menus) made me add buttons in other places even when a key bind performed the required action.
My game would not have the level of UI quality it does without both her tutorials and her direct feedback.
My own UI Design Process
Your project next?
What I will do
- Identify UI flaws: I dive into your game, checking for hiccups in flow and visual design.
- Explain the “why”: Teaching is part of my DNA. That means I won’t just tell you what’s wrong; I’ll show you why it matters.
- Provide tailored feedback: Every game is different, so I offer personalized tips and strategies for your unique project.
- Personal contact: We can either chat or use video calls, based on what you feel more comfortable with.
My Workflow
- I will start with the general look and feel of your game’s UI: Which colors are you using and do they work well together? Is your palette consistent? What do menus look like? Inventories? Modals and info boxes? What Kinds of UI are you using and how? What works, what needs improvement – and why?
- Then, I will look at individual parts in more detail: Are you making sure your margins are alright, are contrasts okay, what About sizes and ease of understanding? Are your icons self-explanatory? Which shapes are you using and do they work with your project? How are elements structured and does your structure make sense?
- A big focus will also be on your game’s typography: Is it readable? consistent? Fitting to your theme? Do you have all the needed characters? What about accessibility?
There is a whole lot more and it will all depend on the type of game and the amount of UI elements you have. I’ve taught design to students, I know what to look for.
Tailored to your game & skillset
No two games are the same, no two game developers are, either. Maybe you need to focus on readable typography over everything else, maybe you need to focus on flow and animations.
I am a big fan of actionable next steps and I hope you are, too.
Why It Matters
But good UI is not witchcraft. It’s a combination of rules to adhere to, best practices to work with and understanding the target audience of your game. You can do this – and I will help you along the way.
How We Will Work Together
- Written Communication or Video Calls – your choice!
- Initial Contact: We will chat about your project, needs, and goals via text chat (Discord), video chat or email.
- UI Review: I’ll take a detailed look at your game’s user interface, noting any issues with layout, color, readability, flow and whatever else comes up and take notes. (Please make sure I’m able to see all required parts of the UI! If there are things I’d need to play your game for hours to unlock it, I will most likely not get there.)
- Action Plan: You tell me how you would like to get my findings. A written document? During a video call? Recorded Gameplay?
- Ongoing Support: Need more help down the road? I’m always here for follow-up calls and additional advice.
- I am totally fine with NDAs, of course, and will treat your game confidential.
- I am based in Germany (UTC+1), so depending on where you live, our meetings could be at slightly odd hours.
What I need from you
Only hand drawn sketches and wireframes on their own might be too early for me to be able to give any meaningful amount of feedback on. But feel freel to just ask if what you have is something I can work with.
My system is a Windows 11 PC with an nVidia GeForce RTX 3060, an Intel Core i7 (12th generation) and 32GB RAM.
Tell me if there is something specific you want me to focus on!
What I won't do
Apart from that, I might refuse your game if it falls into these categories:
- Horror & Jumpscare based
- Overly brutal/bloody
- Real-world-political
- Racist and similarly unpleasant themes
(Since you might be looking for this in this category: NSFW is generally fine, as long as it doesn’t also fall into the areas mentioned above!)
The Price
My pricing is flexible (and starting at 50 Euro/hour) because each project is unique. Once we’ve had a chat about your game—its scope, complexity, and the depth of feedback you want—we’ll figure out a plan (and a price) that suits your needs. I want to make sure you will get support that actually helps you, so let’s talk and find a fair approach that works for both of us.
Your Next Step
Interested? Awesome!
If you have any questions, just ask! I’d love to help.
Otherwise, please send me an email with these contents:
- What are you working on
- Who are you
- Any specific areas you’d like me to focus on—or if you’re just looking for general support
- Include a few screenshots (or a short video on youtube you link to.*) of your game
- Giving me a few names of games your game was inspired by helps a lot!
- If you already have a budget or timeframe in mind, feel free to include that.
And don’t worry: everything you share will stay confidential.
It might take me a few days to go through your materials and get a clear picture of where things stand. After that, I’ll get back to you so we can schedule a discovery call or chat.
And please do not worry about my reaction to your project, no matter what your reason might be for doing so. I know it can be daunting to reach out and share something you’ve poured your time and energy into. I want you to feel respected and valued.
